Move SharePoint Server

To move a SharePoint Portal to another MOSS Server this is as easy as the installation.

You must install MOSS on the new Server
Configure the server as you need it.
Create a new WebApplication.
Create a new SiteCollection
Backup the old portal with the following command stsadm –o backup –url http://yourportalurl/ –filename c:\temp\portal_backup.bak

(stsadm tool can be found under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN)

6. Copy the *.bak file to the new server

N 7. Now restore your *.bak file using the command stsadm –o restore –url http://yournewportalurl/ –filename c:\temp\portal_backup.bak –overwrite

8. That’s it

I can’t believe at first that MS has made this so easy so I check all Sites after restoring, but everything seems to be OK.

Increasing the maximum size of list templates

The default size of a site template is 10485760 bytes and of a list template 10MB. So if you need to increase this limit use the following command:

1. Start-> Run

2. type cmd

3. navigate to the folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN directory

4. stsadm -o setproperty -propertyname max-template-document-size -propertyvalue 50000000

Notes:

The property value parameter is in bytes, so the example above will increase the maximum size to approx 50MB.

There is a hard limit of 500MB so the value must be less than 524288000 or you will get an error when saving the list as a template.

MOSS Search for usernames in fields like Modified by or Created by

Hey guys,

If you have configured your portal and search and then try to find a document, where u know the User which has created or modified this one you will find nothing per default.

The Properties in the advanced Search for fields like created by or modified by are only configured for SPS 2003 Content. I don't know why MS has taken this as default but this has cost me a day of searching the web.

To resolve this issue please follow this steps which i have found on a MSDN Blog. You can use this procedure also for custom fields which have a data type of userNames.

1. Go to the SharedService Administration of your portal

2. Choose Search Settings

3. Then choose from the general settings group the option metadata property management. Then click New managed Property. You will receive the following dialog

4. In the add mapping dialog choose the categorie Office to find the property Office:office#YourDocLibraryColumnName, if you wan to activate the created by or modified by property you must search for the property with name Office:8(Text)
5. Also add another property choose from the categorie All Sites and then search for ows_YourDocLibraryColumnName

6. Please ensure that the checkbox Allow this property to be used in scopes is activated

7. Then Click OK

After that click ok and take a look at the next steps. These are only to check your work.

1. Click on Crawled Properties link on the left side of the Shared Services Administration page

2. Click on the Office Category

3. The mapped property you just created should be listed in the Mapped To column of the Office:office#YourProperty(Text)

4 In the “name and information” section, you should see the “property Set ID:” value is 'F29F85E0-4FF9-1068-AB91-08002B27B3D9' ...This is very important!!!

5. The box to “Include values for this property in the search index” should be checked

6. Click Ok to exit

After that made a full crawl of content sources.

MOSS - unexpected error when trying to open *.cs File

Hey guys,

If you want to store Code Files in a Document Library please mind this tip.

MOSS does not recognize the file extensions for *.cs or something like that.

If you already have stored such a file in a MOSS Document Library and try to open this one you receive the following error:

I'm currently have not found any option to activate *.cs extensions for MOSS - so if you have one please let me know.

Here is a little workaround to open the files.

1. Open with Windows Explorer

- to do this choose from the Actions Menue the 'Open with Windows Explorer' Option as shown below, then you can copy the file from the explorer to your local HDD

2. Check Out File

- Choose from the 'Edit' Menue of the File the 'Check Out' option as shown below

- Then try to open the file by clicking on the file name

- Now Notepad opens the file and you can Save the File to your local disk over the 'File' menue 'Save As' Option.

Create a new SiteCollection in a SiteDirectory

Hi,

I searched a lot to resolve a problem in which i run during customization.

here is the scenario:

I need a SiteDirectory in which we can change the ListSettings of the CreateSite Page, so that a user can add additional informations for this type of site.

problem:

if you try it in the current SiteCollection (CollaborationPortal) you change it for the whole portal. So that was not this what we want :)

workaround:

So we must enable on our WebApplication the Self-Service Site Creation to do that follow the steps below:

Enabling Self Service Site Creation

Log into the Central Administration Site (Note this is a unique site collection as well and if you have it located on a funny port number, it is usually a good idea to add it to your My Links)
Click Application Management
Click Self-service site management
Select the correct web application (that step is easy to miss) and select On for Enable Self-Service Site Creation
Click OK

The next step is to activate the option to create siteCollection under SiteDirectories so follow the steps below:

Enable the creation of Site Collections in Sites Directory

From the portal, use the Site Actions menu, select Modify All Site Settings. If you are not on top level site you will need to go to Top Level Site Settings.
Under site collection administration, select Site Directory Settings.
Select the checkbox to create new site collections from sites directory.

Now you can create a new Site Collection SiteDirectory where you can modify the CreateSite Properties.

To do this follow the steps below:

Change Properties in Site Directory

On the new created SiteDirectory choose View All Site Content
Select the List Sites
Choose the menu item Settings -> List Settings
Now you can create, modify or delete the properties

So the Create Site Page seems to be changed. see picture below:

The last step which we has to made is to create a link on the portal navigation to get access to the new created SiteCollection.

To add a new link to the navigation follow the steps below:

Add a new Tab to the navigation

Go to the portal and choose SiteActions -> Site Settings -> Modify Navigation
Choose the option Add Heading
a dialog will pop up see picture below, there you can add the link to the new site collection

Hey guys,

we currently customize the MOSS Portal and we found a lot of nice features if we could name it feature :)

So I will report this feature in this new serie.

The first feature I have found is following:

Try to delete a sample Site or Workspace. After MOSS has deleted this page you will see the following page:

So could anyone explain me how can i get back to my portal on this page??? No i also don't have found any way to get back to my portal home.
