MOSS Excel Services you do not have permissions to open this file

Hey guys,

if you receive the following Exception if you try to open the sample workbook or another workbook try the following steps:

1. Open Central Administration -> go to Operations tab

- ensure that the Excel Service is running

2. Open Central Administration -> go to your configured Shared Service -> click Excel Service Settings

-  File Access Method:  ensure that it is not using Impersonation, instead the Option Process Account should be enabled.

3. Open Central Administration -> go to your configured Shared Service -> click add new trusted file location

- field URL: here you can specify a report library or the whole portal

- Location Type: should be Windows SharePoint Services

- Children trusted: defines whether the children should also be trusted or only the definied path

Hey

I tried all this. However I am still getting that same error:

You do not have permissions to open this file on Excel Services.

Make sure that the file is in an Excel Services trusted location and that you have access to the file.

Any other ideas?

Hey michael,

The only idea i had is if you have an internal and external adress defined for your portal both must be entered as a trusted location.

If nothing helps you could contact me per mail (nstorandt@daenet.de) an describe your problem and enviroment so that i get furhter informations about your portal and i will try to help you.

greets

Hi Nadine,

I had given the whole path up to report center so it was not working.  I have just given the path upto the site name for the trusted location and its working fine now.

You have made my day.

Thank you very much.

Best Regards

Kalpesh

hello Nadine,

I also have a problem with the trusted file locations and Excel services. The file that i'm trying to open is on a file server. The servername is set as: file://servername/, location = UNC, trust children =yes, workbook calculation mode = Automatic, alleow external data = Trusted data connection libraries and embedded, warn on refresh = ON, stopwhen refresh on open failed = NO.

for testing purposes, the Unattended service account is the domain admin, which obviously also has access to the file share.

the funny thing is that it works if the excel sheet is in a document library on sharepoint, but not when the file is on a fileshare.

I have an excel document in a trusted location (SharePoint Services Location)...all three steps above are satified and I can open the file fine in a browser via Excel Services.

However, I get the same Access Denied error message when trying to open the link to the same document from within an emal alert. Any thoughts?

I ran into another error after i configured the shared service provider as mentioned above, here is the new error which is "The workbook that you selected cannot be loaded because it contains the following features that are not supported by Excel Services:

Comments, ActiveX controls, Shapes, Text Boxes, Pictures, WordArt, Clip Art, Embedded OLE objects, Ink Annotations, Forms Toolbar controls, Control Toolbox controls, Charts that are part of a group, Signature Lines, or Camera objects

"

My error

You do not have permissions to open this file on Excel Services.

Make sure that the file is in an Excel Services trusted location and that you have access to the file.

I tried all this. However I am still getting that same error

Thanks Nadine and Kalpesh - I was also entering the entire library URL and it never worked.  Once I shortened the URL to just the name of the library, it worked great.

Thanks again!

Take Care.

I too had this problem, the problem i think is with spaces.  I tried \\portal\site\sub site\ and it didn't work.  I then tried \\portal\site\ and it worked.  As did \\portal\site\sub%20site the %20 mimics the space.

Hope this helps someone.

Gents .... I've noticed something which might help....

When I was trying to add the document library to the trusted files location in SSP I was copying the full link from the browser and I was getting the same error.

You can rectify this by removing the /froms/default.aspx from the URL in the trusted files location.

I hope this will help someone

Walid, thanks for your post. That was the fix for our issue. It seems to burn me everytime I trust a new location.

Finally solved thanks to the assistance received from you guys.  My issue was that I was putting the incorrect url as the trusted file location.  A tip I believe is true is to browse to the site where your files are located then do the following:

Click Site Settings | Document Library Settings

Copy the web address omitting the pagename.aspx in the list information section on this page.  For example the address I had was:

servername/.../reportslibraryforms/current.aspx">servername/.../current.aspx

I copied only

servername/.../reportslibrary

and it worked.

Great post and subsequent answers. Be careful while giving trusted location. Please note I was stuck with slash.

vmoss/.../Spreadsheets   - was not working

vmoss/.../Spreadsheets/  - worked fine

Use following steps...

  1. In central admin site, in operations page, under services in the server farm enable the Excel Services.

  2. Open up the Shared Services Admin site. Under “Excel Services settings” section, open the ‘Edit Excel Services settings ‘. Set the File Access Method to Process Account. In the same page under the ‘External Data’ section assign the appropriate user.

  3. Back to SSP Admin site. Open the “Excel Services Trusted File Locations”. Give the URL Address of the location where you publish your excel workbooks. Potentially this will be the document library of type excel services. If it’s a document library make sure not to put the complete URL i.e DON’T PUT something like server/doclibraryname/Forms/AllItems.aspx">server/.../AllItems.aspx, instead put it like server/doclibraryname. In my case this is the main reason which showed the above error. If I use full URL I get those errors and no site mentions this after spending hours searching on google.

  4. In the same page under the ‘External Data’ select the Trusted data connection libraries and embedded or just the Trusted data connection libraries.

What worked for me is that I had the Location Type wrong in my Trusted File Location. I had HTTP, I switched it to Windows Sharepoint Services and it worked like a charm! Weird because some stuff would work with the HTTP setting.

my problem is the same as Tariq's

=================================================

The workbook that you selected cannot be loaded because it contains the following features that are not supported by Excel Services:

Comments, ActiveX controls, Shapes, Text Boxes, Pictures, WordArt, Clip Art, Embedded OLE objects, Ink Annotations, Forms Toolbar controls, Control Toolbox controls, Charts that are part of a group, Signature Lines, or Camera objects

Contact the workbook author

knwoing that when i added the trusted location i checked the last box

Allow User-Defined Functions (checked)

Hi! I had the same problem. Solved by adding a trusted location. But another problem came up. Now all XLSX files are opened in browser via Excel Services, but for this certain document library I would like all users to have documents opened in Excel 2007. If I give edit permissions to user, then he can open it in Excel 2007. With only Read permissions there is no easy way to open XLSX files in Excel 2007. Interesting, but old XLS files are opened in Excel 2007 just by clikcking on them (even with only read permissions).

I have followed all the steps and still getting the same error message:

You do not have permissions to open this file on Excel Services.

Make sure that the file is in an Excel Services trusted location and that you have access to the file.

I'm pretty much just a user so most of the technical discussion & suggestions are beyond me.  However, in my case I've noticed an interesting detail.

I get this error only on .xlsx formatted spreadsheets.  The older '.xls' format causes no problems at all.  Could I be in a version compatibility situation, rather than all this trusted location stuff?

Thanks,

Dale

We're struggling with this issue. Behavior I have not seen reported is that it comes and goes. I prepared a demo last night, gave a preview of it this morning, worked like a charm. Several other people hit the site during the day, many graphs displayed in several SP Web pages.

For the big presentation a 4:00, once I moved into the conf room, I got "access denied" on all. Earlier this week we did a lot of trial-and-error testing - I could see all six graphs on a  page; my coworker only three of the six - access denied on the other three.

We've scrubbed the url in the webpart repeatedly; revisited trusted locations, double-checked privileges in SP, and THINK we're doing everything right, but it continues to be flaky.

Thoughts?
